Parabens & Breast Cancer

Do you know what's in your bath and beauty products, candles, and other products you use daily? Did you know that many of the products we use on a daily basis are loaded with harmful ingredients, and most of them can be linked to a higher risk for developing breast cancer? Parabens are one of them. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month so let's learn more about parabens and how they can be linked to breast cancer.

What exactly are parabens? Parabens are a group of synthetic compounds that are used as preservatives in cosmetics, skincare, pharmaceutical, and other products. They are believed to disrupt hormone function by mimicking oestrogen. Too much oestrogen can trigger an increase in breast cell division and growth of tumors, which is why paraben use has been linked to breast cancer.

How do you know what products you may be using contain parabens? Check the ingredient list for: Benzylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Isopropylparaben.

It is important to become aware of what we are ingesting, putting on our skin, burning in our candles, and more. There are many other compounds in the environment that mimic naturally produced estrogen, but we can start by avoiding the harmful ingredients in the products we may use on a daily basis.
